Major Companies Are Downloading the Data From Those 100 Million Public Facebook Profiles

30 juli, 2010

Remember yesterday, when I said that you can all stop freaking out about those 100 million “hacked” Facebook profiles? Well, I wasn’t wrong, but the number of major corporations who have been shown to have downloaded that data is big and scary enough to be slightly worrisome. The data collected was public, of course–all of these corporations could have just found this data on Google.

B&N Offers Students Free NOOKstudy eTextbook Software

13 juli, 2010

Proof, if you needed it, that Barnes & Noble is one of the more dynamic retailers around: as well as hardware, it’s just gone into software, with its free NOOKstudy application, a Mac- and PC-compatible program that lets students keep everything they need on their computer, from textbooks and class handouts, as well as making notes directly into their eTextbooks. The firm, whose Nook is one of the cheapest e-readers around, has been trialling NOOKstudy at schools for a while now, hence its “designed by students, for students” tagline (the teachers also had input, but I guess they weren’t credited because they’re, uh, not cool.) Rather wisely, B&N have decided that NOOKstudy is not something that requires a Nook, just a regular laptop or computer. Out in August, the software will dovetail nicely with the publishing firm’s SparkNotes and Sterling Publishing , and could be a useful tool to beat its close rival, Amazon, with its Kindle

America’s Biggest Seed Company Wants to Turn Gardening Into Self-help

12 juli, 2010

One only needs to note the proliferation of Victory Gardens during World War II or the past year’s explosion of community plots to know that when economic times are tough, Americans head back to the garden. But today’s gardeners are also sowing seeds for weight-loss and environmentalism, according to legendary American seed company Burpee , the country’s oldest and largest seed purveyor. As Burpee CEO George Ball noted earlier this year, sales of Burpee seeds are up 15-20% in 2010 , and consumers are not only turning the soil to save money: Ball says that people are looking to the garden for emotional and physical growth as well

Infographic: The Catholic Church’s International Sex-Abuse Cover-up

19 april, 2010

A single, jaw-dropping graphic that illustrates the scope of the scandal–and the organization-wide attempt to sweep it under the rug. It’s easy to think that amid the all of the allegations of sexual abuse currently scarring the Catholic church, the cover-ups that have followed have been locally driven.

Can a Modern Mosque in Copenhagen Settle the Disputes Between Danes and Muslims?

6 april, 2010

Given the local tensions with Muslim immigrants, the Bjarke Ingels Group mosque is either ingenious or outrageous. Bjarke Ingels Group has conceived of an island resort out of thin air, kidnapped Denmark’s national treasure to show off at the Shanghai Expo, and designed a library for a Kazakh dictator who makes Ivan the Terrible look like St. Francis of Assisi

Infographic of the Day: Eating the Right Fish

6 april, 2010

What fish can you eat regularly, without fear of wiping out the species? If the current rates of overfishing continue, our grandkids will probably look back with a mix of anger and bafflement at the fact that you could readily order up bluefish tuna or red snapper at your local sushi restaurant.
