Netflix Inks Deal With Epix for Streaming Movies

Just when you thought Blockbuster, which added video games to its by-mail service this morning, gained a leg up against competitors, Netflix announced today a major digital partnership with premium TV channel Epix. The deal, last reported at $1 billion over five years, enables Netflix to show Epix’s premium movies on its online streaming service.

European Union Joins FTC in Apple vs. Adobe Probe

The Best Media Writing of the Week

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) — When WikiLeaks released a huge cache of classified reports on the war in Afghanistan, it did so in a strange alliance that had The New York Times, The Guardian and the German weekly Der Spiegel coordinate a timed release of their narratives on the material. Just how those cats were able to herd themselves — and not claw up the source of the material, which also happened to be a publisher of it — was captured in a heart-quickening narrative on the Columbia Journalism Review's website that was one of the best pieces of media writing this week.

Major Companies Are Downloading the Data From Those 100 Million Public Facebook Profiles

Remember yesterday, when I said that you can all stop freaking out about those 100 million “hacked” Facebook profiles? Well, I wasn’t wrong, but the number of major corporations who have been shown to have downloaded that data is big and scary enough to be slightly worrisome. The data collected was public, of course–all of these corporations could have just found this data on Google.

WikiLeaks Publishes 90,000 Military Documents, Points to Pakistan as Ally of Afghan Insurgents

WikiLeaks today released some 92,000 mostly-classified military documents relating to the nine-year-old Afghan War. The documents were given to three major publications, the New York Times , The Guardian UK , and Germany’s Der Spiegel , several weeks ago, with an agreement that the information would not be published until today. The Times included a note to readers explaining the choice to publish classified information, the type of research undertaken to assure veracity of the material, and, briefly, exactly how pissed the White House is that this is all coming out.
