Google Earth Now Shows Rain and Snow in Real Time

30 juli, 2010

Google Earth is one of the great “wow” applications in Google’s stable, especially on touch devices like Android smartphones or the iPad, whether it’s showing undersea formations or cities in 3D . It’s also surprisingly useful, and Google’s always adding elements to it to give it more utility and/or fun. The quandary makes the country an ideal candidate for renewable energy, and in fact Portugal already produces over a third of its energy from renewable sources. Now the country is taking its commitment to renewable a step further by setting goals for a nationwide recharging network for electric cars.

How to Build a Nuclear Fusion Device on the Cheap

1 august, 2009

Europe’s ITER project is blowing $14 billion on the creation of a nuclear fusion power plant, but the bloated project might be outrun by General Fusion , a Vancouver, Canada startup that claims it can build a prototype plant in under a decade for $500 million–pocket change in nuclear fusion terms. ITER’s project, which won’t be ready for nearly 30 years, is so expensive because it uses pricey superconducting magnets (tokamaks) and lasers to contain plasma for a fusion reaction. General Fusion takes a different tactic: the company plans to create a fusion reaction that gives off more energy than is required to sustain it by using low-tech brute force
